Freedom within Structure

Depending on what background of Faith you come from the words Freedom and structure might seem like polar opposites. But the reality is that these two have a symbiotic relationship. The best place to see this symbiotic relationship is with the growth of a child. A good parent will create proper boundaries for the child and then will let the child have freedom within those boundaries to express themselves. Another example of this is when a child is coloring. You will instruct the child to color within the lines(structure), but they could choose any combination of colors they want (freedom or creativity). The result is something that portrays the heart of the child in a beautiful fashion.

This is very true of our relationship with God our Father. In John 15:1-2, Jesus says, “I am the true vine, and My Father is the vine dresser. Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit.” The outline in this coloring book is Jesus (the vine). We cannot stray outside of Him. Within Him we get to discover who are, our purpose, and enjoy life. The Father’s pruning is like when your teacher comes to correct you on your coloring, maybe show you a new technic of coloring so that you can stay within the lines (Jesus). The branches that the Father takes away are bad things in your life that don’t help you produce the Jesus fruit.

Let us embrace the structure that is established by the Holy Spirit, so that we can grow to fulfill all that the Father has destined for us.
