How Jeff found his Purpose – Part 8: The Next Day

The next day

Jeff woke up the next morning full of joy and peace. He felt like a two-tone weight had been lifted off his shoulder. He went to work, and his co-workers noticed that there was something different about him. His attitude was completely different. All his co-workers concluded that there was a peace about him that they couldn’t explain. The news got to Annie, so she walked to see Jeff.

“So, what happened last night?” Annie asked

Before Jeff could answer another co-worker named AJ curiously came to his office as well.

“What is going on here?” AJ asked, “Both of you are different. There is a certain joy and peace about the both of you. Are you dating?”

“Ha-ha no we are not.” Annie said hysterically

“Then what is going on? The whole office is talking about both of you.” AJ asked

“When we are ready to talk about it we will explain.” Jeff said

AJ left, so Annie and Jeff resumed their conversation.

“As I was about to say,” Jeff began, “I couldn’t sleep last night for some reason. So, I decided to get out of bed and go to the bathroom but as I was on the way to the bathroom, this voice spoke to me and said, ‘You keep trying to ignore me, and all I want is for you to give me a chance to show myself to you.’ I was so terrified, and I almost peed my pants. I asked who was there, and this is what I heard, ‘It is Me Jesus, whom you have been learning about all week. Don’t be afraid, I am here so that I can prove to you that this is not a joke or a game. I am more real than you can ever imagine. All the things that you see, and touch were all created through me.’ After this I went back to sleep and decided to give my life to the Lord.”

“Wow! I have heard those stories when I was in church. They always told us the Lord only speaks to some of us. He chooses to speak to his special children. That must mean that you are one of his special ones.” Annie said with a smile on her face

Even though Annie was excited about the experience Jeff had, deep down she a little sad. She wanted the Lord to speak to her like He did Jeff.

“I know what we are going to do, let’s call Benny and have lunch with him. I will tell him my experience and see what he says about this.”

“That’s a good plan.” Annie agreed with him.

Jeff contacted Benny and they set up a meeting at lunch. They were really looking forward to talking to Benny about this. Lunch time arrived and off they went to meet him. They went to their offsite office (chipotle) to meet with Benny. Benny was curious as to what this pertained to because he was caught a little off guard. Jeff explained to him what happened, and Benny was so ecstatic. Annie explained what she was taught growing hoping that she was taught wrong.

“Wow! This is awesome news, I can’t wait to tell Pastor Kenneth. He will be so excited. To answer your question Annie, no, the Lord doesn’t talk only to special Christians. He talks to His children. The last time I checked you are a child of God, so He talks to you to.”

“So, how can I hear His voice?” Annie asked curiously.

“Also, what do I have to do to make what happened last night happen again?” Jeff asked

“When it comes to hearing God, there are many ways that the Lord can speak to us. He speaks to us through the word, which is the primary way. He also speaks to us through dreams, visions, He speaks to us like it happened to you, and through other people. That is not the extensive list, there are many other ways. Whenever I explain about God speaking to us, I focus on these three ways: the inward witness, the inward voice, and Him speaking directly. Before I begin explaining what they are, I must explain to you one of the most significant things when it comes to hearing His voice. But, first let’s see what the Bible has to say about God speaking to us. In Psalms 32:8 it states, “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye. Do not be like the horse or like the mule, which have no understanding, which must be harnessed with bit and bridle, else they will not come near you.” In this verse, the Lord is telling us that He will speak to us. He warns us against using outside influence, but to really on His inward influence. Another scripture is John 10:27, “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me.” Here Jesus is stating that if you belong to Him, you hear His voice. This is a guarantee that He is giving us.”

“If what you saying is true then why have I never heard his voice? Why did my church believe that God didn’t speak to everybody?” Annie asked in frustration.

“It is a matter of the heart. This is the most significant thing when it comes to hearing God” Benny answered, “Look at this passage in John 12:27-31, ““Now My soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? But for this purpose, I came to this hour. Father, glorify Your name.” Then a voice came from heaven, saying, “I have both glorified it and will glorify it again.” Therefore, the people who stood by and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, “An angel has spoken to Him.” Jesus answered and said, “This voice did not come because of Me, but for your sake….” In this verse God spoke audibly but the people still missed Him. If you keep on reading in verse 34, the people tell Jesus that the law said that the son of Man shall live forever. Then a little further, you see they chose to not believe in Him. They focused on the Law and for as long as you focus on the law, that makes you self-conscious. The Bible teaches that the law exposes sin. It exposes sin by comparing you to perfection. The law is perfect and the moment you put something not perfect to something that is perfect, you begin to see the flaws. The people here in this passage lived under the law and they were constantly trying to prove themselves and for as long as you are focusing on your strengths you will miss God, like they did. That is why people don’t hear God. They don’t hear Him because they are being self-conscious instead of God-conscious.”

“So, how do I become God-conscious?” Annie asked

“The simple answer is by keeping him at the center of your life. This is what the Bible means when it says renew your mind. You are renewing your mind from you first to God first.” Benny answered

“Wow! Thank you for explaining this to us.” Annie said

“We have to go back to work. I really appreciate you in our lives. Thank you for taking your time to explain this to us.” Jeff said

“You are welcomed Jeff.”

Jeff and Annie left chipotle with a satisfied heart. On their way back they couldn’t stop of being thankful that God connected them to Benny and now Kenneth.
