Sunday morning arrived so Annie and Jeff went to meet Benny and Bree at the church. On their way Annie was a little anxious because this going to be her first time in church for a long time. Jeff was anxious because he had never been to church before. As they approached the building they spotted Benny and Bree already at the church waiting for them.
“Hello, Jeff who is your friend?” Benny asked
“Oh! So sorry this is Annie. We work together.”
“How are you doing Annie, my name is Bree. I am Benny’s wife.”
“Nice to meet both of you.” Annie said.
“Service is about to start so let’s go in.” Benny said.
The choir was singing praise and worship, and it was powerful. Both Annie and Jeff were enjoying it. They both never experience worship like this. The congregation was in tune with the choir and they just seemed free. After the worship the pastor got up and took the stage.
“Hello church. Today’s speaker is one of our own. He has been with us since he was fifteen years old. He doesn’t need any introduction, so come on up Benny!” The pastor said
The church got up in applause as Benny went up to preach.
“Good morning everybody? Today I want to talk to you about a matter that is close to my heart. Today marks my two-year anniversary of being a full-time evangelist. I have preached everywhere I have had the chance to preach. I have preached in the parks, churches, and even in street corners. I have been to jail because when I was at the corners the police thought I was a male prostitute. When I went to jail, I preached to my cell mates. They were a captive audience. In all these travels, I have noticed one thing about the believers and non-believers that I have met. They don’t really know what it means to be born again, and that is what I want to teach on today. The title of this message is ‘The simple explanation of being born again’.
In this message I will answer the what, why, where, and how of Christianity. So, what is being born again? The bible answers that question in Colossians 1:13. This is what it states, “He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love…” That right there explains what being born again means. Being born again per the above verse is switching Kingdoms. Also, Ephesians 5:8 adds that at one time we were children of darkness but now we are the children of light. When a child is born into this world, they are born in sin. Look at Psalms 51:5, “Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin my mother conceived me.” This verse tells me that everybody who is born into this world is born in sin. When someone get’s born again, you are born of God. Turn your Bible’s to John 1:13, “…. who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.” To summarize all that I have said, being born again is when you are born of God and translated into His kingdom.
So, why do we have to get born again? When Adam was in the Garden of Eden, God warned him against eating the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. God tells him, if you eat of the tree you will die. We know the story, Adam and Eve go ahead and eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, and God casts them out of the Garden. The funny thing is that they go on to live 900 years. So, we must ask ourselves, what did God mean when He said, they shall surely die when they eat of the tree. Go with me to John 17:3 and I want to read to you what it says, “And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.” When Adam were in the garden, they had a relationship with God and the Lord would reveal Himself to them. But when they ate of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, they were separated from God who is Life according to John 1:4. When they were separated from life they were joined to death. God was talking about spiritual death when He was warning Adam. Spiritual death is when you are separated from life and joined to death. From the day, Adam sinned to the day a person is born again, death reigns over his/her life according to Romans 5:14. Unbelievers walk under the power of death and the ultimate fruit of the power of spiritual death is physical death. Before physical death, there are a lot of fruits of death. You can see these other fruits of death listed in Deuteronomy 28:15-68.
Where does a person get born again? In John 3:3-8, Jesus was explaining this question to Nicodemus. Jesus said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the Spirit.” In His answer, Jesus pointed out great truths. The first one is one must be born of water and the Spirit. This statement puts restrictions on who can get born again and the method of being born again. The first restriction is one must be born of water. This means natural birth. It automatically excludes non-human entities like demons and fallen angels. So, what Jesus is saying only human beings can be born again. The second restriction is one must be born of the Spirit. The Spirit He is talking about is the Holy Spirit. There is no other spirit that can do it and has been given the authority to do it. Another truth is what part of man can be born again. You must understand that you are a triune being. In 1st Thessalonians 5:23, Paul states that may the Lord keep our spirit, soul, and body blameless. This indicates that man is a triune being. Ecclesiastes 12:7 states that when we die our body goes back to the ground while our spirit goes back to God who gave it. This confirms that we have a spirit. Our spirit consists of intuition, communion, and conscience. Our soul consists of the mind (thoughts), will and emotions. Our body consists of the five senses. This is what Jesus is telling Nicodemus, the spirit of a person is what is being born again. The best way I can explain this truth is like this; When you accept Christ as your Lord and savior, the spirit is born again. As you grow in the Lord and renew you mind, your soul is being born again, and on resurrection morning your body will be born again.
How does it happen? Romans 10:9-13 states, “… that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.” For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him. For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”” There is nothing extra that you must do to be born again. Our works don’t earn us salvation! It’s only our belief in who Christ is and what He has done. Amen!
Church, I pray that as I was speaking the Lord was speaking to you about being born again for those who haven’t accepted Christ as their Lord. For those of you who are born again, I pray now you have a better understanding of your salvation. As the comes up here to sing the people who haven’t accepted Christ, think about the decision you have to make because God will not override your will.”
Benny went to sit down as the choir was singing. The pastor came up and continued with the altar call. Ten people went down to give their lives to the Lord. After the service people came to talk to Benny and tell him how, they were thankful for his sermon. They stayed around and chatted with some members and headed out to lunch with Annie and Jeff. They invited the pastor and his wife to join them for lunch.
