How Jeff found his Purpose – Part 2: The Coffee Shop (Part 1)

Coffee shops

The next day arrived and Jeff got up and went for a jog in Central Park, as was his custom. He came back from the jog and got himself ready and went to work. When he arrived at work all his coworkers noticed something different about him. He was just in a chipper mood. Obviously, his coworkers wanted to know what was the cause of this. They guessed that he met a girl and that was the reason for his mood. Annie, one of his coworkers, decided to go up to him to enquire what was making him so chipper.

“So, Jeff you seem happy today,” Annie commented.

“It’s just a beautiful day, the sun’s out and the weather is awesome,” Jeff said.

“You sure that’s all?” she asked.

“Yeah, that’s all. I’m always happy; I’m a happy guy.”

“Yeah, you always are, but this is different,” she said as she walked away.

Jeff didn’t want to tell her the real reason, because he was afraid of what she would think of him. The real reason why he was excited was because of his meeting with the evangelist later in the day. Throughout the day, he was counting down the seconds. Five seconds seemed like an eternity to him. When 5 pm arrived, he dashed out of the office and went to meet the evangelist. Jeff arrived at the coffee shop, and saw the evangelist was already there waiting for him. He approached him with a lot of anticipation.

“Sorry I’m late,” Jeff said.

“That’s okay, I just got here myself.”

“Boy, don’t I have questions for you. My first question is, could you tell me who Jesus is? I wasn’t brought up in a religious home so most of what you were talking about yesterday were new things to me. Could you start from the top and explain to me who this Jesus guy is?” Jeff asked.

“Okay first, I will give you a brief overview of what the Gospel is, and we will go from there. In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. God then created Adam and Eve and placed them in the Garden of Eden. While they lived there, they lived in perfect peace and harmony. God had a relationship with them and they enjoyed what God created for them. A fallen angel who used to be called Lucifer, now named Satan deceived them and they disobeyed God. This was like committing treason and treason, as you know, is punishable by death. The only difference is that the death that God talked about was spiritual death. Spiritual death is separation from God, who is life. When we were separated from God, we were joined to death and everything that was created was joined to death. God, moved by love, sent His only Son, Jesus, to take our punishment on our behalf. Jesus came and died on the cross. When He died on that cross, God punished Him for every person who had ever walked on this planet and every person who will ever walk on this planet. On the third day after his death, Jesus rose from the dead and declared that if anybody accepted Him as his/her Lord and Savior, then he/she has all the right to call God his/her Father. Jesus restored the relationship that we lost in the garden. So, for a person to get this relationship with God back, all they must do is believe with their heart that Jesus is Lord and confess it with their mouth. That is a brief overview of the Gospel,” the evangelist said.

“You cannot honestly believe all that?!” Jeff exclaimed, “You seriously don’t believe in evolution?”

“No, I don’t. It requires more faith to believe in the big bang theory and evolution. There are too many variables that have to happen perfectly for both theories to happen,” the evangelist said.

“Why are you so confident that creation happened?” Jeff asked.

“Well, the answer is pretty simple. I chose to believe the Bible and everything that is in it. It’s like this, if I die today, and I realize that there is nothing after death, then I will be proud that I lived a life serving a higher cause than my own. But if you die, and realize that the Bible is true, then you have a lot of problems.”

Jeff leaned back on his chair and looked up to the ceiling and began pondering all that the evangelist said. In his heart he responded to everything the evangelist said, but in his mind, there was a battle. The evangelist just sat their quietly, because he realized what was going on. Five minutes went by and Jeff was still pondering the words of the evangelist.

“So, what about………” Jeff attempted to ask a question but Benny’s phone went off.

“Excuse me, it’s my wife. She knows not to call me unless it’s an emergency.” Benny said

Benny went outside to answer the phone call. He came back with a distressed look on his face.

“I’m sorry I have to go, our house just got robbed and I have to go back and make sure that my wife is ok. Let us meet tomorrow and we can continue with this conversation.”

Jeff was a little disappointed because he thought this was going to be the night his questions got answered but now he would have to wait for another day.
